Indian fashion mogul Mona Patel stole the spotlight at the Met Gala 2024 with her stunning “mechanical butterflies” dress, styled by popular stylist Law Roach. As people marveled at her charm and viral outfit, they wondered about the creative mind behind it all. Entrepreneur and philanthropist Mona Patel made a grand debut at the fashion event, turning heads with a breathtaking gown that went beyond just looking glamorous. This unique dress, crafted by Iris Van Herpen, perfectly matched the theme of “The Garden of Time.” Featuring butterfly sleeves and intricate mechanics, it was truly a work of art.

Hailing from Vadodara, Gujarat, Patel went to the US when she was young to start businesses. Her story is inspiring, much like the charity work she does. She started at Rutgers University and in 2003, she moved to a new country to follow her dreams. Now, she’s a big deal in her industry, running a million-dollar empire with many businesses. According to Vogue, her nonprofit, Couture For Cause, is at the heart of what she does, mixing fashion with helping others for important reasons.

“I wanted my debut look to be something that celebrates my heritage and also combines my love couture, and when I heard of the theme, Iris Van Herpen seemed like the obvious choice,” Patel had said, opening up about her Met Gala look, in an interview with Vogue India, in March.

The Dutch designer’s haute couture style is out of this world, taking cues from nature in the most unique and extreme ways. They create special outfits, some of which are made by Indian embroidery houses they often team up with. The end result? A stunning nude gown that flows to the floor, with a butterfly-shaped corset and a trailing edge. Keeping in line with the theme “Garden of Time,” Patel’s form-fitting gown surprises with an unexpected detail. You’ll notice a bunch of butterflies around her arms, moving slowly as if they were gloves.
