New Delhi: Kailash Katkar was a poor student who was never interested in studies. He was born in a regular Indian family in the small Maharashtrian village of Rahmatpur. Katkar’s father was a machine setter and wanted his son to become an engineer. After failing in the ninth standard, Kailash Katkar left his studies battling difficult circumstances.
That day, his father’s hopes might have been dashed, but who knew that this school dropout would one day become a prosperous entrepreneur in the antivirus industry and the owner of what is now known as Quick Heal.
Kailash Katkar’s First Job
To help his family financially, Kailash Katkar, who came from a humble background, started repairing radios and tape recorders at a very young age. Later, Kailash got a job as a calculator technician at a nearby radio and calculator repair shop, where he was paid Rs. 400 per month.
Kailash Katkar’s First Increment
Impressed by his technical knowledge and skills, when he was only 19, the owner sent him to his second shop in Mumbai for a training period of two months. He then started working with him in his Pune business at a salary of Rs 1,500 per month.
He gained a lot of knowledge and expertise about repairing calculators, radios and businesses in general during the next five years in this job.
Kailash Katkar’s journey as an entrepreneur
In 1990, Kailash believed he was ready and it was the ideal time to take the leap into entrepreneurship and open his own calculator repair business. Said Kailash started the one-man business with Rs 15,000 from his savings and renting a small 100 sq ft office in Pune.
The business earned a respectable (at that time) Rs 45,000 in its first year only. But in spite of this humble victory, Kailash was dissatisfied. He read more, began taking short computer classes, and began expanding his skill set to diversify his portfolio.

In 1993, while still operating his calculator repair business, he made another change and started a new company called Cat Computer Services. His office was located within a one-room electrical appliance repair shop.
These efforts paid off when they got their first break a few months later and both families agreed to pay Rs 2,000 annually for each family’s personal computer maintenance. And by relying on these newly found customers, he started attracting more customers.
He also managed to enter the corporate world a few months later in September, when he was awarded an annual maintenance contract for New India Insurance. A month later, another organization quickly followed.
Moving on, the first Quick Heal anti-virus for DOS was finally published in 1994, and as you can probably guess, it helped establish a whole new market. Then, in 1995 and 1996 respectively, Win 3.1 and Windows 95 came as their successors.
