In an exclusive conversation with News18, Pradyot Manikya Debbarma, whose organization made a big splash in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections two years ago, said that the BJP’s attempts to intimidate others will not yield results

The much-awaited Tripura elections finally began on Thursday, with the state recording 14 per cent voter turnout till 9 am and the process off to a peaceful start.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is contesting from Town Bardovali constituency, was also among the first to vote. Exuding confidence that the BJP will get an absolute majority, Saha said, “I am 100 per cent sure that the BJP will get an absolute majority in the elections. The party may get more seats than last time.”

Saha’s confidence, however, did not seem to have swayed former royal scion and Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Manikya Debbarma, whose organization had swept the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections two years ago by winning 18 out of 30 seats .

Sitting in the Ujjayant Palace, a relaxed-looking Debbarma said the BJP and Saha had suffered a severe blow.

In an exclusive conversation with News18, Tipra Motha Pramukh said that apart from EVM malfunctioning at some places, there are also reports of violence in Charilam and other areas. However, despite this he said that people are coming to vote. “There is very good turnout in the hilly areas. We have put in our hard work and effort and will see the results,” he said.

Taking a dig at Saha’s “confidence”, Debbarma said, “He has no option but to say that he is confident.” Tell me, which Chief Minister will say that he does not have faith? I can tell you that their confidence will be gone soon because they will not have the required numbers. The pretense of their trust will be shattered.

Admitting to attempts of intimidation, Shahi said the BJP’s strategy will not work. “We are sure that people will vote for us and time will answer all. I am going to vote in Mandhei in some time and I am happy that more people will come to vote.
