‘When Women Are Not Safe Inside House…’: Delhi Mayor After ‘Life-Threatening Attack’ By BJP Councillors

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House was on Friday (February 24, 2023) rocked by fresh clashes between councilors of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with Mayor Shelly Oberoi alleging that some members The saffron camp made a murderous attack on him. In a press conference, she also alleged that her colleague Ashu Thakur was attacked by a BJP corporator.

A massive fight broke out between the BJP and AAP corporators inside the House after Oberoi declared as “invalid” a vote cast during the MCD’s Standing Committee election on Friday.

Leaders of both the parties punched, kicked and slapped each other in the House.

Shelly Oberoi alleged, “When I was announcing the standing committee election results, they (BJP corporators) pushed my chair and attacked me. BJP corporators Ravi Negi, Arjun Marwah, Chandan Chowdhary and others viciously attacked me.”

“When women are not safe inside the municipal building, how can they be safe in Delhi? I have filed a complaint against three BJP councilors and others and sought police protection,” he said.

The mayor of Delhi said that the ballot papers used on Friday were “torn” and lost, so as a matter of moral responsibility, fresh elections would be held on February 27 to elect six members of the MCD’s standing committee.

She also said that the commotion was disrespectful of the House and the mayor’s chair, and was “sheer hooliganism”.

I was dragged by my dupatta: AAP corporator Ashu Thakur

AAP councilor Ashu Thakur alleged that his scarf was wrapped around his neck and he was dragged from the dais to an exit of the House.

“I was dragged from the stage to the exit by my dupatta, and if the cloth had been tighter, it could have suffocated me,” she said.

There was a ruckus at MCD House on Wednesday night as well, with BJP and AAP members fighting each other and throwing plastic bottles.
