WhatsApp Pay was launched in India in 2020 with a 20 million cap on the number of users using the service.

WhatsApp initially had a limit of 20 million users for its payments feature. Last year it was increased to 40 million and now it has been increased to 100 million.

Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has had a paid feature for a while now, but it isn’t popular at all. The feature allows users to pay for their contacts with UPI, and WhatsApp is trying to make the feature visible to entice users to use the feature on the instant messaging app. The company has now received approval from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to add 60 million more users to the payments feature. NPCI has approved an additional 60 million users on UPI for WhatsApp and with this approval, WhatsApp will be able to expand its payments service to 100 million users.

This comes as a significant development WhatsApp, as the company has earlier told NPCI that there should be no limit on the number of users of its payment services in India. Instead, NPCI has given a limit of 100 million to WhatsApp, which is 60 million more than the previous limit of WhatsApp paid users in India. While 100 million sounds like a lot, it’s not even close to WhatsApp’s more than 500 million users in India.

WhatsApp’s payment feature is not as popular as the Meta-owned company expected in India. Competes with the likes of WhatsApp google pay, PaytmAnd phonepe in the Indian market. Given that these payment apps have to some extent established themselves as the most trusted players in the digital payments space, it will be difficult for WhatsApp to establish that kind of market in India.
