What Made 2022 The Year Of The Rise of Kannada Cinema

The year 2022 has been all about Kannada cinema and their box office collections prove it. Unlike the past few years, the Kannada film industry is making a game-changer with stunning nationwide streaming.

All thanks to Telugu filmmaker SS Rajamouli, South Indian cinema gained a new foothold in the country after Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion. Rajamouli paved the way, but KGF star Yash deserves credit for envisioning an all-India Kannada film industry. KGF Chapter 1 made its way into the Hindi belt in 2018, but the icing on the cake was the sequel (KGF Chapter 2), which debuted in 2022.

The Kannada film industry was known for producing the maximum number of films in the Indian film industry, but Sandalwood earned the distinction of being the highest grosser among film industries across the country this year. As per reports, the top five Kannada grossers would have earned over ₹1,800 crore by 2022. A significant portion of that amount, close to ₹1,200 crore, was earned by Hombale films from KGF Chapter 2 alone.

Films like Charlie 777 and Vikrant Rona aroused interest in the Hindi market. Surprisingly, a low budget film like Kantara made deep inroads in the Hindi belt and earned over 400 crores.

Ba Ma Harish, president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, said that 2022 saw a lot of new developments. The industry has gained great fame in foreign countries. It’s amazing for a small budget film to get so much attention. This will help not only Kannada industry but other industries as well.
