what if…? is an animated series from Marvel Studios that re-imagines some of the characters and events from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What if Peggy Carter had taken Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers? What if T’Challa became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill?
Created by AC Bradley, the series is the TV equivalent of the comic-book anthology series of the same name that has been around since the 1970s. The stories are based on the Multiverse concept which is now canon for the MCU. Jeffrey Wright, whose character is one of The Watchers, serves as the narrator.
Fortunately, What If…?’s exploration of alternate events doesn’t just scratch the surface. It goes deep and explains how, if a character were different from them, it would change the universe around them. Most speculative stories concerning alternate timelines follow the butterfly effect, according to which a smaller wave may eventually result in a larger wave. what if…? No different considering the three episodes that have been made available to critics so far.
In the first episode, it is Peggy Carter who is injected with Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers and becomes Captain Carter. Howard Stark painted his vibranium shield with the symbol of the Union Jack and it is he who fights the Nazis, to the dismay of the Allied governments, hoping for a male savior.
What happens to Steve? Does he remain small and insignificant? Small, yes. Insignificant, no. To say anything else would be entering spoiler territory.
This episode makes me think a lot. The biggest consideration is whether Peggy would not have been a better super soldier. Although the MCU is based on comic books and a suspension of disbelief is necessary to enjoy these stories, watching Steve not only look like a muscular hunk clearly has the effect of Serum, but like someone to fight and dodge. Weird too, who has taken training. Compete for the rest of your life. However, his only training was in the face of threats and his blows.
Peggy, with her combat and espionage training, would almost certainly have been a better Super Soldier.
Another episode deals with T’Challa, and it’s here that you can enjoy the final performance of Chadwick Boseman’s life, even if it’s just his voice. Her Wakandan prince is accidentally kidnapped by Yondu’s miscreants and becomes Star-Lord. but what if…? Like other alternative scenarios in the US, it doesn’t stop here. It goes far beyond your expectation.
what if…? It has excellent, in-depth writing that allows it to create an immersive world by appealing to the creative side of the MCU fans in you.
The voice performance is as good as you’d expect, and even when the original actors aren’t voicing their roles, as in the case of Tony Stark, it’s hard to tell the difference.
Wright has a voice that should be used for every audiobook in existence – calm, soothing, and thoughtful. The only complaint here is that it only has a few lines, a few more in the intro and a few more in the outro.
The animation style is somewhere in between anime and CGI. This works for both fast-paced, realistic action sequences such as dramatic films, as well as more cartoony action.
what if…? Is entertaining and delivers big time on its promise.
