West Bengal reports first case of Omicron variant, 7-year-old boy tests positive

New Delhi: West Bengal on Wednesday reported its first Omicron case as a seven-year-old boy, who had come from Hyderabad via Abu Dhabi, was infected with the new Covid-19 variant.

However, the child’s parents have tested negative for the infection. The family lives in Farakka town of Murshidabad district of the state.

At present, the child running in home isolation will be admitted to the hospital.

“He was tested at Kolkata airport. The area (Farakka) where they live will be declared as a strict containment zone following the COVID rules,” said Sandeep Sanyal, Chief Medical Officer Health (CMOH), Murshidabad.

Earlier, two cases of the Omicron variant were reported at Hyderabad airport after a national of Kenya and one from Somalia arrived in the city.

With these fresh cases, the number of omicrons in the country has reportedly increased to 65.

Earlier on Tuesday, eight more patients were found infected with the Omicron variant in Maharashtra.

Earlier in the day, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has crossed 134.61 crore, with over 68 lakh vaccine doses given in the last 24 hours.

With 8,168 patients being cured in the last 24 hours, the cumulative number of cured patients since the start of the coronavirus pandemic has risen to 3,41,46,931, the health ministry said.

“As a result, India’s recovery rate is 98.38 per cent, which is the highest since March 2020,” the ministry said in a release.

The Health Ministry further said that in the last 24 hours, 6,984 new cases were reported in the country.
