A BCCI official told India Today that the board had spoken to Virat Kohli in September and urged him not to step down from the T20I captaincy.

“Virat Kohli can’t say we didn’t keep him in the loop. We spoke to Virat in September and asked him not to give up T20 captaincy. Once Virat left T20 captaincy on his own, it was difficult 2. Virat’s remarks are contrary to the statements made by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly in the past few days. Ganguly had mentioned that he had personally spoken to Kohli about the decision to name Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain and the same was done by chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma.

Ganguly said, “…Actually, the BCCI requested Virat not to step down as the T20 captain, but obviously he did not agree. And the selectors then decided to have two different captains for the two white-ball formats.” Didn’t feel right to keep it.” told ANI.
