Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday rejected attempts to ‘find other meaning’ on August 16.played hobe day’ Reminding that on that day in 1980, as all football lovers of Bengal painfully remember, a tragedy broke out. Banerjee said Khela Hobe Diwas would be a celebration of sports and sportsmanship and would be a tribute to all sports lovers.

On 16 August 1980, 16 people who had come to watch the East Bengal-Mohun Bagan derby at the Eden Gardens were killed in a stampede. It is celebrated as Football Lovers Day on grounds and elsewhere.
During his 21 July Martyrs’ Day speech on Wednesday, CM Banerjee 16 August was declared as ‘Khela Hobe Day’, making his choice of date an immediate effect by the BJP. “August 14 is Kanyashree Dayit’s 15 august Independence day, August 16 will be Khela Hobe Day,” the CM said.
“On that day, 1 lakh footballs will be distributed. Joy balls will be distributed to all clubs across the state, including 283 clubs affiliated to IFA,” Banerjee said and added that IFA clubs will get 10 footballs each.
Of these, 50,000 footballs will be of Joy brand, handmade by women self-help groups and Bengal prisoners under the refugee handicrafts (RH) units of the state. These footballs were named by CM Banerjee.
