“We Showed BJP’s Seat Count Can Be Reduced”, Says Akhilesh Yadav

Akhilesh Yadav said, 'We have shown that the number of seats for BJP can be reduced'

Akhilesh Yadav tweeted, “The struggle in public interest will continue.”

A day after the BJP’s record victory in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav thanked voters for their support and said they have shown that the BJP’s seat count can be reduced.

Taking to Twitter this morning, Mr. Yadav said he was grateful to the voters of the state for increasing the number of seats by two and a half times and increasing their vote share by one and a half times.

In his first public response, he said, “We have shown that the BJP’s seat count can be reduced. This decline will continue. More than half the lies have been wiped out, the rest will follow. The struggle for public interest will continue.” ” The results were declared yesterday.

Of the 403 seats in the politically important state, the BJP and its allies have won a total of 273 seats. This was a drop of 49 seats from the party’s tally in the 2017 elections, when it ousted the Samajwadi Party government.

The Akhilesh Yadav-led party won 111 seats on its own and the coalition led by him won 125 constituencies. This was a jump of 73 from his performance in the 2017 election. This was also the best performance of the Samajwadi Party so far.

Mr. Yadav traveled the length and breadth of the country’s largest state to reach out to voters and seek their support for the high-voltage election. This time, he did not forge an alliance with the Congress as in the 2017 election, or the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party, as in the 2019 election – both alliances had little electoral success.

As the results showed, the Samajwadi Party was able to consolidate a large section of the anti-BJP vote, but failed to come anywhere close to the BJP’s huge mandate.

In terms of vote share, the Samajwadi Party managed to garner 32 per cent votes against the BJP’s 41 per cent.
