New Zealand’s versatile all-rounder Glenn Phillips stunned the cricket world again on Saturday, July 22, by pulling off another inhuman effort catch in the ongoing Major League Cricket 2023 (MLC) tournament. Former India U19 bowler Saurabh Netrawalkar stole the show with six for nine, but Phillips was about to entertain the crowd at Morrisville’s Church Street Park with four catches in a single game.

Playing for the Washington Freedom, Glenn was bowled by San Francisco Unicorns pacer Haris Rauf for a duck. But the Kiwi all-rounder took four catches while fielding, including a stunner to dismiss rival opener and his national teammate Finn Allen.

In the third over, Finn Allen tried to loft the ball over cover off Anrich Nortje, but due to the high pace, it went in the air towards third man, where Glenn Phillips ran backwards and took a diving catch and everyone’s breath stopped.

The 26-year-old batsman, who can bowl and also don the wicket-keeping gloves for Sunrisers Hyderabad in Indian Premier League 2023, has time and again shown his prowess in the outfield with some stunning catches.

He took a similar catch to dismiss during the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 match against Australia Marcus Stoinis, He dived in the air to take an impossible catch which the media dubbed a ‘Superman’ effort.

Meanwhile, Phillips also took comfortable catches to dismiss MLC 2023’s leading run-getter Corey Anderson, Matthew Wade and Haris Rauf. Glenn’s efforts in the field helped Aaron FinchLed by Washington Freedom, they defended 133 runs and moved to the second spot in the points table with their third win in four matches.

Glenn had to struggle for runs and lost his place in the Sunrisers Hyderabad team Heinrich Klaasen during IPL 2023. His struggles with the bat continue in MLC 2023 and he has scored just 55 runs in 4 innings so far at a strike rate of 130.55.
