Rising from the grassroots in Ranchi to conquer the world, Dhoni has a reported net worth of Rs 1,040 crore along with countless fans across the globe. But as money is being laundered in cricket in recent times, Dhoni’s aim was not just to make big bucks, especially in his early days.

Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has revealed an unheard anecdote about MS Dhoni. The former batsman has said that even after making his international debut for India, Dhoni wanted to earn only Rs 30 lakh. Jaffer revealed while talking to Sportskeeda. “I remember I came back in the year 2005, and Dhoni was new to the team as he had made his debut playing one-day cricket in late 2004 (December 2004). I used to play Test cricket then. I, my wife, Dinesh Karthik, his wife, Dhoni and RP Singh, and all of us used to sit in the last few seats. Jaffer said, “Dhoni used to talk to my wife a lot because we used to sit together and we all used to talk a lot.”

He then added that since Dhoni comes from a very grassroots background and struggled to play cricket during his job in the Railways, the wicket-keeper batsman must have thought about it. “We all know that he used to work in railways, and he had to travel a lot to practice his game. Many times he did not get a chance to play even after so much struggle. I think he left that job. Di, or something like that and he used to say that he wanted to earn 30 lakhs so that he could spend the rest of his life peacefully in Ranchi and he didn’t even want to leave Ranchi.

“He said that no matter what happens, he would never leave Ranchi. Since he was very new to the international set-up at that time, he used to say ‘if I earn 30 lakhs, it will be enough for me to live peacefully. Will happen.’ He was, and I think he is still equally grounded. Even after achieving so much in his career after such a long time, it is the humility of the man. He has small goals and small goals.
