Was PM Modi’s letter on Paswan’s death anniversary asking for the legacy of Chirag’s father?

LJP leader Chirag Paswan will organize a program on the first death anniversary of his father and Dalit leader Ram Vilas Paswan in Patna on Sunday. Paswan has said that he has invited top national leaders including the Prime Minister Narendra ModiHome Minister Amit Shah and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for the programme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a heartfelt letter on the death anniversary of Ram Vilas Paswan, who was also his former cabinet colleague. Chirag Paswan, posting the letter on Twitter, thanked the Prime Minister for his affection for the late leader.

Ram Vilas Paswan was a powerful Dalit leader from Bihar and the founder of Lok Janshakti Party. He died on 8 October last year. His son Chirag Paswan is going as per the traditional calendar to celebrate his father’s first death anniversary on 12 September.

However, the incident has increased political significance for Chirag Paswan, who is embroiled in a bitter dispute with his uncle and Union Minister Pashupati Kumar Paras over claiming his father’s legacy. While his uncle has taken over the reins of the party, Chirag has been isolated with some members of his own party. Amidst all the setbacks, Chirag is eager not only to lay claim to his father’s legacy but also to strengthen ties with his political opponents.

invitation to enemies

Among other invitees, Paswan has also invited his political enemies including Pashupati Kumar Paras and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the mega anniversary. Chirag Paswan had said yesterday that he was desperate to meet Nitish Kumar, whom he wanted to invite for ‘Barsi’. The Jamui MP said he was ready to meet the chief minister “in the wee hours of the night or even tomorrow morning” and hoped that Kumar would attend the function in view of the cordial relationship with his late father.

Last year, Chirag had a heated argument with CM Nitish Kumar and openly criticized the Chief Minister for the situation and development of Kovid-19 in Bihar. He had walked out of the NDA alliance and pitted candidates against Nitish’s candidates.

rebel uncle

LJP leader and Union Minister Pashupati Kumar Paras said that he will attend the death anniversary today. Talking to PTI, Paras said that he is glad that Chirag Paswan visited his residence recently and invited him to the event.

Meanwhile, Paras also plans to organize a mega event at his party office in Patna on October 8 to mark the first death anniversary of Ram Vilas Paswan. He said that he would invite the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and leaders of all political parties to the event.

Paras and Chirag have become bitter rivals as the former took over the reins of the party with some supporters within the party following a political drama that isolated Chirag. Chirag tries to get his uncle to take over the reins of the party, but with little success. Chirag also showed displeasure against the Modi government’s decision to include Paras in the cabinet.

‘Signs of rebellion’

With little support from within the party and the BJP, Chirag met Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD last week and hinted at a political restructuring. While neither of them denied or admitted to getting together, their reactions indicated that both may be in the process of reaching a political agenda in the near future.

Recently, Chirag had installed a statue of Ram Vilas Paswan in a hurry after Paswan was given a notice to vacate the government residence. An 8-inch tall statue of Ram Vilas Paswan was installed in the middle of the bungalow. In Bihar, the BJP has opposed the installation of the statue.
