India’s Test captain Virat Kohli and co have begun their preparations for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa, starting December 26. Kohli shared a picture with his teammates on Saturday, just after his maiden training session in Supersport ended. Park in Centurion.

Kohli posted a picture with Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Jayant Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Cheteshwar Pujara, writing, “Session 1 done.”

India will take on South Africa in three Tests and as many ODIs during the tour which runs from 26 December to 23 January. The tour was modified and the T20I was postponed to a later date.

While Kohli will lead the side in Tests, India will miss their opener Rohit Sharma for the red-ball series as he is battling an injury. Rohit was appointed the Test vice-captain earlier this month but since his ouster, his opening partner KL Rahul was named as the stand-in vice-captain on Saturday.

Apart from Rohit, India would also be without the all-round spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, with batsman Shubman Gill also ruled out of the tour due to various injuries.

The tour was initially scheduled to begin on December 17, but was pushed back by a week due to the emergence of a new COVID version. The tour is underway at Centurion before moving to Johannesburg for the second Test and then Cape Town for the third match.

The first two ODIs will be played at Boland Park in Paarl while the third will be played in Cape Town.

The COVID protocol has also been modified by Cricket South Africa in the light of the new version.
