Verona inflict first loss on Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma

Roma under Jose Mourinho dropped their first point in Serie A on Sunday as Verona came from behind to hand new coach Igor Tudor a 3-2 win on his debut.

Lorenzo Pellegrini’s clever backheel flick gave Roma a half-time lead in a torrential downpour as they secured their fourth consecutive win to start the season.

Antonin Barack equalized for Verona immediately after the interval and Gianluca Capri put the hosts ahead with a perfect finish five minutes later.

Ivan Ilic converted a Pellegrini cross into his own goal to bring Roma level before the hour, but a brilliant volley from David Faraoni secured the win to stop a run of three straight losses for Verona.

“I knew his qualities even before he changed the coach,” Mourinho told DAZN.

“They had already created a big problem for their opponents. And when there is a coaching change there is often a reaction from the psychic, it can happen.”

“There is nothing to reprimand the players for their attitude. But we didn’t suit his style of play, we lost individual battles and had more intensity.”

Roma’s city rivals Lazio needed a late goal from Danilo Cataldi to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Cagliari.

Ciro Immobil scored for the fifth time in four games as Lazio advanced just before the break.

Joo Pedro’s looping header pulled Lazio backward at the start of the second half, with Keita Balde then firing from home to put Cagliari on top against his former club.

But the Sardinian club could not hold off on Walter Mazari’s win in the first game in charge as Cataldi fired in the top corner seven minutes from time to save Lazio.

Venezia’s first Serie A home match since the 2001–02 season ended in a 2–1 loss to Spezia.

Simone Bastoni curled in a sensational effort as Spezia took an early lead at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo, an interesting ground at the south-eastern tip of Venice’s main archipelago.

Pietro Ceccroni led Venezia level on the hour, but Mehdi Borrabia’s superb injury-time strike gave Thiago Motta’s Spezia their first win.

AC Milan will look to bounce back from a loss in their first Champions League match since 2014, when they travel to Juventus later on Sunday.

Juve are looking to build on their 3-0 win at Malmö and sabotage Milan’s perfect start to the league campaign.

Massimiliano Allegri’s team were considered pre-season favorites for Scudetto, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure and only one draw from three matches have left them in a dilemma.

Juve are second from the bottom and nine points behind defending champions and league leaders Inter Milan.
