Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami orders inquiry into the dismissal of Dalit cook

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday ordered a probe into the alleged sacking of a Dalit woman cook at a government school in Champawat after some upper caste students refused to eat food cooked by her. Dhami asked Kumaon DIG Nilesh Anand Bharan to visit the school in Sukhidhang to conduct an inquiry into the incident and take strict action against the culprits.

Bharan has also been asked to keep a watch on those spreading rumors about the incident, an official release said. A day after her appointment as “Bhojanmata” earlier this month, upper caste students had stopped eating the food cooked by her because of their caste and started bringing their food from home in tiffin boxes.

Even the parents of the students had objected to his appointment. The officials had earlier said that his appointment was canceled as it was found that norms were not followed in this regard.
