White House spokesman Kevin Munoz said Friday that the United States will lift temporary travel restrictions on eight southern Africa countries on December 31.

Foreign nationals who have been barred from the United States because they have lived in one of eight countries within the past 14 days will be required to travel to the US no later than 12:01 p.m. ET on December 31, Reuters news agency reports. will be allowed to board the flights. Kevin Munoz announced the decision on Twitter, saying, “The sanctions gave us time to understand Omicron and we know that our current vaccines work against Omicron, especially Boost.”

The restrictions imposed last month were meant to blunt the spread of the new ‘Omicron’ version of COVID-19. The November 29 ban banned virtually all non-US citizens, most recently in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.
