At least three people, including two police officers, were killed in a shooting by an 18-year-old on Monday in the northwestern New Mexico community of Farmington. Schools in a New Mexico town were temporarily closed because of Monday’s shooting, police said.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. in Farmington, a city of about 50,000 residents located near the Utah state line. Farmington is both a supply line and a residential area for workers in the oil and natural gas industry, making it an important hub for the region.

Authorities in Farmington, a city of 50,000 people 200 miles (320 kilometers) from the state capital Santa Fe, said the suspect was “encountered and killed at the scene” and was no longer a danger to the public.

The exact location of the shooting and the manner in which it happened were not immediately available.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the Farmington Police Department said “there are multiple civilian victims with at least three dead.”

Two officers were shot while responding to a shooting by multiple officers. He is undergoing treatment at the hospital and his condition is said to be stable.

The identity of the suspect is currently unknown, and the incidents are under investigation.

Farmington Municipal Schools said that “all students and staff are safe.” After a brief lockdown, local schools were allowed to reopen on Monday afternoon.

The non-governmental organization Gun Violence Archive reports that the United States has seen more than 215 mass shootings this year.

Notably, the shooting in New Mexico is the third shooting in the United States in May, following similar incidents in Florida and Las Vegas this month.
