The Supreme Court has struck down constitutional protections for abortion that it had for nearly 50 years in its conservative majority decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Friday’s result is expected to ban abortions in nearly half of the states.

The decision, unimaginable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an ardent right side of the court that was vindicated by former President Donald Trump’s three appointees.

The ruling came more than a month after Justice Samuel Alito’s surprise leak of a draft opinion suggested that the court was prepared to take this important step.

According to opinion polls, this places the court with a majority of Americans who supported preserving Roe.
