UP Police helps 20-year-old mentally challenged woman reunite with family in Assam after 2 years

new Delhi: A 20-year-old mentally challenged woman from Assam, who had reached Noida in 2019, has been reunited with her family with the help of the Uttar Pradesh Police, officials said on Wednesday.

He said the woman reached Noida on October 19, 2019, following which her matter reached the local authorities, who admitted her to a government-run shelter home following due procedures.

“The woman hails from Udalgiri district of Assam. She was in the shelter home in Sector 34, Noida since 2019. Recently, after several rounds of counselling, the woman was able to remember her mother’s name and a phone number, Which helped us to get in touch with his family,” Vinod Panwar, in-charge of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Noida Police told PTI.

According to the official, the woman was in Assam when she married a local man against the wishes of her financially weak family. However, their relationship soon turned sour, leaving the woman in a situation where she was abandoned by her husband and she too could not return to her family.

“Unfortunately, she reached the National Capital Region (NCR) and then to Noida. When the local authorities checked her, she was very minor and was suffering from mental health problems. Eventually, her condition got better with time, And she was able to tell us her mother’s name along with the phone number,” Panwar said.

He said that AHTU has been able to reunite more than two dozen such people who have taken shelter in government facilities here with their families from 2021 onwards.

Panwar said, ‘Our effort has been to reach out to the people with sensitivity. There have been many occasions when our counselors talk to him but despite several visits, no concrete information is received.

“However, the instructions to counselors, including women officers, are clear: Be polite, kind and sensitive with prisoners, and the efforts are showing results,” he said.

The official said that the Assamese woman’s mother reached Noida and the mother-daughter duo left for home on Tuesday evening by train.
