UP election results: Congress loses bail in 97 per cent seats, BSP on 72%

The Congress in Uttar Pradesh lost its security deposit in 387 out of 399 seats in the recently concluded assembly elections. The party has won only two seats. However, after contesting almost all the seats, the Congress got just 2.4% of the total votes, which was less than the RLD’s 2.9 per cent votes on which it contested.

According to a report in Times of India, former CM Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is another major party which lost its deposits in 290 out of all 403 seats. Even the victorious BJP lost its bail in three of the 376 seats it contested and its strong rival Samajwadi Party (SP) lost its deposits in six of its 347 seats.

The BJP’s alliance partners – Apna Dal (Sonelal) and the Nishad Party – did not lose their deposits in any of the 27 seats they contested, a sign that they were given only those seats they were allowed to contest. Got a chance

In contrast, the smaller SP parties SBSP and Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) lost their security deposit to 8 out of their combined 25 candidates. Even senior ally RLD lost his deposit in three of the 33 seats he contested.

As per election rules, a candidate who fails to secure at least one-sixth of the total valid votes cast in a constituency forfeits his security deposit. Overall, out of 4,442 contestants in UP, 3,522 or about 80% failed to get their security deposits back.

According to the Election Commission, the BJP got the highest 41.3 percent votes in the assembly elections, followed by the Samajwadi Party with 32 percent votes. In the 2017 assembly elections, the BSP contested all 403 seats and won only 19 of them, while forfeiting its deposits in 81 seats. The party had polled over 22 per cent of the total votes cast in 2017.
