The united leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bengaluru MP Tejasvi Surya and Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai, found themselves on the opposing sides when it came to supporting a team of the Indian Premiere League (IPL).

A clear-cut stance, Surya backed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) while Annamalai stood with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), when a reporter asked them about their picks from the IPL teams.

The question was “a bit controversial, RCB or CSK?” Laughing at the question, Tejasvi Surya responded “100 per cent RCB brother, 100 per cent.” Meanwhile Annamalai cited that this is CSK legend MS Dhoni’s last tournament and said “CSK totally”.

Taking the Karnataka vs Chennai debate one step further, the two BJP leaders were asked about their Sambhar preference. “Karnataka sambharu or Tamil Nadu sambhar?”

An exuberant Surya said, “Udupi Karnataka sambhar. We are the inventors of Karnataka sambhar, there is nothing like a Tamil Nadu sambhar brother.” Annamalai, on the other hand, replied to the question with another question and asked, “Why do you want to create controversy?”

The popular faces of the BJP’s southern camp were seen together while campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections. Annamalai was in Bengaluru to seek votes in favour of party’s Bangalore South candidate, Tejasvi Surya.

“I came here to seek votes for our brother Tejasvi Surya, he is a wonderful candidate. In these ten years, PM Modi’s government has given good schemes for Bengaluru… I request you all to vote for Tejasvi Surya,” Annamalai had said during the roadshow in Bengaluru on Monday.

Surya also praised the BJP Tamil Nadu president and said that he enjoys a massive fan following in Bengaluru South as he worked as the DCP there and the people know him well.

“I thank him for taking time out to come here to support us…Appeasement politics and vote bank politics have cost the nation. It is time that Congress learns its lesson or people will teach it a lesson,” Surya told news agency ANI.

Annamalai had also exuded confidence over the BJP’s win in Karnataka and said that there is a clear positive trend in the state, adding that “it will be clean sweep for NDA”.

“We will get 28 out of 28 seats. The reason is very simple, the people of Karnataka love PM Modi. This will be the best-ever performance of NDA in the Southern part of our country…On June 4, PM Modi is going to win across all states and in all corners of the country,” Annamalai said.

Karnataka, with 28 parliamentary seats, will vote in two phases. While 14 seats will go into polling in the second of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections on April 26, the remaining 14 will vote in the third round, on May 7.

The choice question between RCB and CSK comes amid the ongoing IPL season.

The 2024 IPL season, in fact, opened with a match between the two teams in Chennai’s Chepauk stadium. As Faf du Plessis continued to lead RCB, CSK ushered into a new era with Ruturaj Gaikwad being named as the captain of the team, after the legendary MS Dhoni.
