The Union Home Ministry, through an order issued on Saturday, reduced the security category of BJP MP and former cabinet minister Babul Supriyo. They have been shifted from ‘Z’ to ‘Y’ category.

According to sources, the reduction in security has been done on the basis of internal threat perception report. The Central Reserve Police Force, which is responsible for providing security, has started the process of reducing their guard.

Supriyo had announced that he had quit politics, but his plans changed as he would continue to serve as a Member of Parliament.

The MP from West Bengal’s Asansol, who had created a political storm over his announcement to quit politics on Facebook, said he would refrain from indulging in political activities and would give up his security and residence in Delhi.

Posting on Facebook, he wrote, “I am leaving…Alvida (farewell)…if you want to do social work, you can do it without joining politics…”.

Supriyo lost his post as the Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change after a cabinet reshuffle on July 7 this year.
