The United Nations General Assembly on Monday approved a resolution establishing a permanent forum for people of African descent to provide expert advice to address the challenges of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance.

The resolution, adopted unanimously by the 193-member world body, also calls for the forum to serve as “a forum for the protection and improvement of the quality of life and livelihoods of people of African descent” and their full inclusion in those societies. where they live.

The Forum takes place during the International Decade for People of African Origin established by the General Assembly, which began on January 1, 2015 and ended on December 31, 2024. It is focusing on themes of recognition, justice and development. .

The creation of the new body comes ahead of the 20th anniversary of the controversial September 2001 United Nations World Conference in Durban, South Africa, which was dominated by conflict over the Middle East and the legacy of slavery. The US and Israel went out on a draft resolution during the meeting, criticizing Israel and comparing Zionism to racism.

The final documents removed language that condemned and called for the eradication of the curses of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance. The documents also expressed deep regret at the human suffering caused by slavery, and acknowledged that slavery and the slave trade are crimes against humanity and should have always been so.

The resolution adopted by the General Assembly on Monday said racism continues to be widespread and should be condemned, despite examples and efforts to combat various forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance.

The gathering observed that “all human beings are born free and in equal respect and rights and have the capacity to make a constructive contribution to the development and welfare of society.”

“Any theory of racial superiority is scientifically false, morally reprehensible, socially unjust and dangerous and must be rejected along with theories that attempt to determine the existence of distinct human races,” it said. Said.

The assembly called the global fight against racism “a matter of priority for the international community”.

A number of mandates were given to the Permanent Forum of African-origin Peoples. These include helping to ensure “full political, economic and social inclusion of people of African descent” and providing expert advice and recommendations to address racism to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council, the General Assembly’s main committees and UN agencies.

The resolution said the forum would have 10 members – five elected by the General Assembly from all regions and five appointed by the Human Rights Council after consultation with regional groups and organizations of people of African descent.

It calls for the first session of the Forum to be held in 2022. It calls for an annual report to the Assembly and the Council on the activities of the Forum and its conduct by the General Assembly after four sessions, based on that assessment. Human Rights Council.
