His fan following has also increased since doing commentary in cricket matches. And now, he is often heard sharing interesting anecdotes on cricket talk shows.

In a recent conversation with Cricbuzz on his ‘Rise of New India’ show, Karthik went down memory lane and recalled Umesh Yadav’s journey in the Indian cricket set-up. He has been an integral part of the team in the longest format of the game but gets less chances due to stiff competition with players like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

Karthik said Umesh tasted early success after making his debut in 2010.

“You have to understand his roots. He is a coal miner’s son, and he tried to be a part of the police academy. It didn’t work out and then he moved to fast bowling and his growth rate at that level, from 2008 onwards, When he started playing for Vidarbha, he made it to the Indian team in 2010, that’s a rapid growth rate. Then he stagnated at a certain point and then stagnated. When this happens to a cricketer, you It seems to have become difficult. He is no different and must have been hurt.

“When you have an attack like Bumrah and Shami, the third down is always between Ishant and Umesh and at times it is between Ishant, Shami and Umesh. But when he played with two medium pacers in India, he became Ishant and Shami at times.

Despite displaying decent performances, Umesh has often been overlooked, be it with the Indian team or an IPL franchise. Karthik said going unsold in the 2022 IPL mega auction was Umesh’s lowest point.

“He was overlooked a lot of times and that must have really hurt him because every time he came on he put in a two or three wicket performance but was never good enough to be in that position,” he said. You know he was pushed out… I think the toughest time was when he didn’t sell at an auction. It must have hurt him really badly,” he said.
