Globally, news searches for ‘Ukraine’ dominated. On a cold February morning the country awoke to the invasion of its neighbor Russia. Since then, many months have passed. But the war still continues.

The second most searched news item was about ‘Queen Elizabeth passing’. The longest-reigning British monarch has died at the age of 96, after seven decades on the throne.

‘Election results’ piqued the interest of people across voting countries this year, with ‘Brazilian general election’ topping the breakout search.

‘Powerball Number’, ‘Monkeypox’ and ‘Hurricane Ian’ came in fourth, fifth and sixth, followed by ‘Johnny Depp Verdict’ and ‘Texas School Shooting’.

Actor Will Smith, who made headlines when he slapped Oscars host Chris Rock over a joke on his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, also made it to the list. ‘Will Smith Thappad’ was the ninth most searched news of 2022.

In tenth place is ‘Roe v Wade’, the US decision on abortion rights. The US Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion in early October, sparking massive outrage across the country and around the world.
