British police said on Thursday they had arrested four people after protesters painted a giant Ukrainian flag on the street outside the Russian embassy in London.

The Donkeys-led campaign group said they painted the 500-square-metre (5,400-sq-ft) blue-and-yellow flag to mark one year since Russia invaded Ukraine. It said the activists wanted to remind Russian President Vladimir Putin that “Ukraine is an independent state and a people with all rights to self-determination.”

The group said workers brought the cars to a safe stop before pouring 160 liters (35 gallons) of paint onto the road. The vehicles then spread paint in both directions to form the flag.

London’s Metropolitan Police said officers have arrested three men and a woman on suspicion of criminal damage and obstructing a highway. They remained in custody.
