UK over 150,000 Covid deaths, government urges public to get boosters

The number of daily reported cases has declined since last week’s record figure of more than 200,000

London:

More than 150,000 people have died in the United Kingdom after catching the coronavirus, the government said on Saturday, in a milestone for one of the worst-affected countries in Europe.

The government reported that deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID test had reached 150,057 since the start of the pandemic. Russia is the only European country where the death toll is high.

The number of daily reported cases has declined since last week’s record figure of more than 200,000, with 146,390 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

The sheer number of people testing positive or in self-isolation has hit the health workforce, prompting the Defense Ministry to announce on Friday it would send troops to assist staff in hospitals.

Hospitalizations and deaths are nonetheless much lower than in the first wave of the pandemic, when people were not vaccinated.

The government is urging the public to get the booster, which has already been administered to about 61 percent of the population over the age of 12. It’s also trying to persuade non-vaccinated people to get jabs.
