Twitter has shut down nearly 3,500 accounts that were posting pro-government propaganda in six countries, including China and Russia, AFP reported on Thursday.

According to Twitter, most of the accounts that have been suspended were involved in a network that “increases narratives of the Chinese Communist Party concerning the treatment of the Uighur population in Xinjiang,” AFP reported.

This is not the first time China has come under scrutiny for exploiting the Uighur population in Xinjiang province.

Beijing is facing allegations of serious human rights violations against an ethnic minority in the Northwest Province, where experts have estimated that more than a million people are imprisoned in camps.

The majority of the Uighur population in Xinjiang are Pakistani refugees who lead a miserable life. Many countries, including India, have raised human rights violations being committed against ethnic minorities.

In addition to Twitter, Facebook owner Meta Platforms also removed more than 500 accounts linked to an online propaganda network, mainly based in China, according to a BBC report.
