Twitter Rolls Out Encrypted DMs Feature To Verified Users

New Delhi: Twitter has begun rolling out its long-promised encrypted direct messaging (DM) feature, but it comes with some significant limitations that may not appeal to privacy-conscious users. To send and receive encrypted messages, both the sender and the recipient must be a “Verified User” or an affiliate of a “Verified Organization,” according to the company.

It’s unclear whether encryption will be added to the growing list of special features for check-marked users or if it’s just for the initial rollout. The company currently allows up to ten devices per user for encrypted messages. Once users reach the limit, they will no longer be able to send and receive encrypted messages on any new devices logged into Twitter.

Beyond that, sending an encrypted message is similar to sending a regular unencrypted message, the company said. “If you’re eligible to send encrypted messages, you’ll see a toggle after clicking the message icon to enable “encrypted” mode.

Selecting an eligible recipient, composing a message and clicking send will send an encrypted message, Twitter explained.
