A woman allegedly beheaded her 50-year-old husband and put the blood-soaked head in a plastic bag at the family’s temple in Tripura’s Khowai district in the early hours of Saturday, a police official said.

While Khowai Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty said the reason behind the murder was not yet known, the couple’s elder son said that his mother recently developed a psychiatric disorder and was treated by a local tantrik.

The 42-year-old woman was arrested from her residence in Indira Colony village of the district. She was living there with her husband Ravindra Tanti, a daily wage laborer and two minor sons.

“My mother has always been a vegetarian. But last night she had chicken and we all fell asleep. Suddenly I woke up and saw that my father had been beheaded. I was shocked to see my mother standing with dao (a sharp weapon) covered in blood. When we raised a noise, she came out of the room and placed my father’s head in our temple,” said the elder son.

He then imprisoned himself in a room, from where the police arrested him. “We have recovered the body and arrested the woman. An investigation has started,” the SP told PTI.

He said the forensic team has visited the spot and collected evidence. Regarding the mental illness of the accused, Chakraborty said that he cannot comment on it without the doctor’s report.
