According to officials, around 31,000 polling personnel and 25,000 security personnel of central forces have been deployed to conduct the elections in a free, fair and peaceful manner. Besides this, 31,000 personnel of State Armed Police and State Police will be deployed to maintain law and order, news agency PTI quoted the CEO as saying.

While prohibitory orders are also in force across the state as a precautionary measure and will remain in force till 6 am on February 17, international and inter-state borders have also been sealed to prevent any untoward incident.

A total of 28.13 lakh voters, including 13.53 lakh women, will decide the fate of 259 candidates, of whom 20 are women.

Among the top contenders in Tripura is Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who is contesting from Town Bordovali. A Congressman, Saha joined the BJP in 2016 and was made the party’s state president in 2021. Saha, who became a Rajya Sabha MP last year, replaces Biplab Deb, who was asked to resign as chief minister last year.

BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharya will make his election debut from Banmalipur seat. Bhattacharya, who was the vice-president of the Tripura state BJP under Deb, was appointed BJP chief last year when Saha became the chief minister.

Some other top names in the race are Pratima Bhowmick: BJP’s Union minister from Dhanpur constituency; Jishnu Dev Barman: Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura representing Charilam constituency; Jitendra Chowdhary: A strong tribal leader; Sudip Roy Barman: Six-time MLA from Agartala who joined BJP in 2018 but soon returned to Congress; Birjit Sinha: State Congress President Sinha who is contesting from Kailashahar; Pradyot Manikya: Royal scion of Tripura who stayed with Congress for many years until he broke away to form Tipra Motha; Manik Sarkar: Former Chief Minister of Tripura served the state for more than 20 years.
