Trauma Services partially resumed at AIIMS JPNATC; Kovid care will continue on specified floors

The institute’s director Randeep Guleria said on Wednesday that the trauma services at the AIIMS Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center here will be partially restored from August 31. Keeping in view the decline in COVID-19 cases and the increasing demand for non-Covid care, the decision has been taken to make the trauma center partially operational, he told PTI.

The director said that some designated wards or floors will continue to be used for COVID care, adding that the trauma emergency will be run from the main AIIMS hospital for the time being. “Also, this is being done in such a way that if there is a rise in cases, the trauma center can again be converted into a dedicated COVID-19 facility as was done during the first and second wave.

“From Friday, a test will be done and it will be functional from August 31,” he said. The move comes after a meeting on the coronavirus situation on Tuesday chaired by Guleria. It was decided to operate trauma wards, ICU, OTS and radiology services for trauma care (non-COVID) by the coming weekend.

Both covid and non-covid services will be run from the trauma center. “The trauma emergency will be conducted from the main hospital for the time being and all the emergency operations will be done in the main hospital,” he said. According to a circular issued by trauma center head Rajesh Malhotra, relatively stable patients will be admitted to trauma centers and elective surgeries/surgeries of such patients will be done at Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center (JPNATC).

There will be no direct admission in JPNATC. X-ray and ultrasonography (USG) for COVID-19 patients will be done using portable machines, while the first floor CT room will be used for such patients, it said. Only elective/relatively stable patients will be operated in the Operation Theater (OT) from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

“All departments are advised to prepare their respective area and make it functional by August 27. They are also advised to rationally redistribute the equipment set and trained manpower between the main AIIMS and JPNATC for smooth running of services. “They can transfer patients from August 28 in such a way that the first OT case can be taken on Tuesday (August 31),” the circular said.
