Prayagraj: Rising prices of life saving medicines have shocked Allahabad Drug and Chemist Association and patients equally Sangam City,
Anil Dubey, president of Allahabad Chemist and Druggist, admitted to TOI that the prices of life-saving drugs, including antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, have gone up by about 40 per cent in the last four months.
He said that the medical representatives have again indicated that the prices of essential medicines are likely to rise further due to shortage of raw material.
He added the prices of amoxicillin, ofloxacillinParacetamol, ciprofloxacin, and other essential drugs have increased by 10 percent per month for the past four months, leaving chemists and patients in a tizzy.
He further demanded the central government to take immediate corrective measures to control the prices of essential medicines.
Prayag Chemists and Druggists Association (Retail) organizing secretary Nikhil Malang told TOI that the persistent rise in prices of raw materials, including active pharmaceutical ingredients, which are largely imported from neighboring China, has adversely affected the industries. He said that we are urging the central government to look into the crisis.
He said that the prices of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs have gone up and the pharma units are selling new batch drugs at higher rates in the market. Patients are forced to buy essential medicines after spending more than their pocket money. Not only medicines used for heart patients, sugar patients and blood pressure control, the price of essential paracetamol medicine has increased by 10 to 20 percent in recent days.
Meanwhile, Dubey said that apart from raw material, drug makers have increased the prices as these companies are spending enough money on packaging and transportation of medicines. The price of Pain Killer and Bitmin 12 has also gone up.
