Top cop allegedly shoots wife, nephew dead before killing self

Pune: An ACP from Pune’s Balewadi area killed his wife and nephew and soon after, he shot himself at his resident. Chaturshrungi police station was in the process of registering the offence.

The officer was identified as 57-year-old Bharat Gaikwad, who was posted as Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Amravati district. The woman was identified as ACP Moni Gaikwad (44) wife and his nephew Deepak Gaikwad (35).

As per the police investigation, ACP Gaikwad was on leave and had returned to his home in Laxman Nagar on Saturday. Police suspect that he used his personal pistol to fire at his wife and nephew at around 3.15 am. It is also suspected that he may have shot himself.

ACP Gaikwad’s mother, two sons and other family members were present at the house during the incident. He heard gunshots and immediately informed the police. Responding promptly, a police team reached the spot and started their investigation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashikant Borate said, “No suicide note has been found so far and we are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the reason behind this tragic incident.”
