Tokyo Olympics: Poland wins inaugural 4x400m mixed relay gold

Poland registered an upset victory in the inaugural Olympic 4x400m mixed relay on Saturday, with the Dominican Republic taking silver and the United States taking bronze.

The Polish team, which included Karol Zalevski, Natalia Kazmarek, Justina Swiety-Erstic and Kajetan Duzynski, put on a scintillating performance inside the fan-free Olympic Stadium after posting the fastest time in Friday’s heats.

It was the first Olympic medal for all four teammates, who hugged happily as the anchor leg runner crossed the finish line in a time of three minutes 9.87 seconds.

The United States was the favorite after winning the event at the 2019 World Championships, but almost missed a place in the final after being disqualified for exchanging the baton outside the change zone in Friday’s first round. Organizers later reinstated them, citing an official’s mistake.
