A village in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district, where the family of Indian women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia lives, is ranked 9th after the team defeated world champions Australia to reach the semi-finals in Tokyo.

Savita remained calm and did her job perfectly and this is the reason why her family and villagers are celebrating her success here.

His entire family lives in Jhansal village of Bhadra tehsil area of Hanumangarh district.

Savita’s uncle Omprakash Punia says, “Actually her father Mahendra Singh was born in this village. His grandfather, uncle, aunt, cousin, all live here.”

Savita had last come here in 2019, when villagers gifted her silver hockey, said Omprakash, who is the Jhansal sarpanch and Savita’s uncle.

“It was a grand event where all the villagers gathered and presented them silver hockey to show their love and warmth towards them,” he said.

His father, who was born and brought up here, shifted to Haryana about 25 years ago. However, Savita has been coming here quite often. Omprakash said that the entire family is well attached to Savita and she also gives equal love and respect to everyone.

Punia thwarted every Australian attack to help India register a 1-0 win and help the team reach the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics.
