Tokyo Olympics: Annu misses out on women’s javelin throw final, finishes 14th

India’s Annu Rani could not qualify for the women’s javelin throw final at the Olympic Games, finishing 14th with a throw of below 54.04m here on Tuesday. Annu started with a throw of 50.35m in her second attempt in Group A and improved to 53.19m, with 14 contenders.

The 29-year-old needed a major effort to make it to the 12-women’s final and although she improved marginally, it was nowhere close to the 63-metre automatic qualifying mark. The effort was less than his personal best of 63.24m, which he achieved in the Federation Cup earlier this year.

Poland’s Maria Andrzycz was the only thrower who could earn automatic qualification by sending Spear to 65.25m on her first attempt. As per the rules, the best performing throwers of 63 meters or at least 12 qualify for the final.

In the men’s section starting on Wednesday, all eyes will now be on the contender Neeraj Chopra.
