TMC to meet President to demand removal of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta

Raising pitch on its demand for removal of Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta due to a “meeting” with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, the Trinamool Congress on Saturday said it will meet President Ram Nath Kovind to press for the issue. TMC’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Sukhendu Shekhar Roy said a high-level party delegation will meet the President on Monday.

“We had sought time from the Hon’ble President and he has given us time on Monday. We will meet him to pressurize the demand for removal of SG,” Roy told reporters. He said that at present this is the only agenda of the proposed meeting.

TMC MPs Derek O’Brien, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy and Mahua Maitra on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging “improperness” in the alleged meeting between Adhikari and Mehta at his official residence as a BJP MLA. Narada and Sharda cases where investigation is going on. TMC leaders said SG is appearing on behalf of CBI in the Supreme Court and the High Court in the Narada case, besides advising the probe agency in the Saradha chit fund scam.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Adhikari and Mehta said the BJP leaders had gone to Mehta’s residence in Delhi but the SG did not meet him. The TMC has also demanded that all the CCTV footage installed at Mehta’s residence be made public till the officer is present, in support of the claim that there was no meeting between the two.
