Mysuru: People turning up to have food at Indira Canteens in Gundlupet, Kollegal, and Yelandur in Chamarajanagar district had to return with empty stomachs as the three canteens have suddenly shut their service without any prior intimation to consumers.
The three canteens have remained closed since Sunday. However, the only functioning Indira Canteen in Chamarajanagar city may also close if the government does not clear the pending bills of the contractor.
Sources in Chamarajanagar Urban Development Cell said the three canteens were forced to close as the workers have not been paid wages by the contractor.
Many students, daily wage workers, and underprivileged people who depend on such canteens for breakfast and mid-day meals have suffered since Sunday. More than 1,500 people were turning up daily at the Indira Canteen at Kollegal town, 850 in in Gundlupet and 500 in Yelandur.
“As the Indira Canteen in Kollegal has not opened for the last two days, people like me are returning without any breakfast and meals. Daily wagers and poor people who depended upon such canteens have been hit hard. The government must immediately open such canteens,” said Mahadevshetty of Siddaiahanapur village of Kollegal taluk, a daily wage worker.
Notice to contractor
District urban development cell deputy director MV Sudha told TOI that she had already issued a show cause notice to the contractor. The contractor has promised to reopen the services from Thursday, she said.
Chamarajanagar additional deputy commissioner Katyayinidevi told TOI that she has instructed the district urban development cell deputy director to reopen the canteen.
