PRAYAGRAJ: In the Amhta Sawaya Village Of Pratapgarh District, a group of rural women is working tirelessly to shape “dona and pattal” (bowl and plate made from leaves of sal or banyan tree) with the help of automatic machines. A group of 11 women led by Pushpa and linked to a single self-help group (SHG) Shivgrah The blocks are building eco-friendly anywhere between 200 to 400 “Donna and Patal” plates every day.
Interestingly, buyers of fine branded plates have come not only from UP but also from neighboring states. In addition, the demand for plates has increased in rural areas across the state.
District mission manager (Pratapgarh) Ratan Mishra told TOI, “A group of 11 women started working for making “dona and pattal” plates from the month of April this year after investing around Rs 1.5 lakh. He bought semi-automatic machines and is now earning Rs.8,000 per month.
He further added, “We have organized a week-first training camp of “Dona & Pattal” for women in Amhta Sawaiah village, where women are taught the entire process of making plates with machines.
This step was launched under the UP State Rural Livelihood Mission.UPSRLM) and also aimed at facilitating financial independence of rural women belonging to self-help groups.
However, he added that the project to make “Dona and Pattal” had started yielding good results after the installation of the machines, when the women’s group started getting orders from local markets of Pratapgarh and neighboring districts. Sultanpur and Jaunpur.
Presently women are making “Dona and Pattal” plates of all types and different sizes as per the requirement of the markets and are shipping the goods. A woman poet said that “Dona and Pattal” plates are eco-friendly and can be easily discarded after use.” She added, “It is not only made of plant leaves, but it also protects our ecosystem. Doesn’t harm.”
He further said that the demand for “Dona and Pattal” plates has increased manifold during local fairs as well as during large religious celebrations like Kumbh or Ardh Kumbh, where plastic and thermocol items were completely banned.
Another woman, Lakshmi said, “People have become quite conscious about environmental protection and they ask for better and better sized “dona and pattal” as it serves different types of food during events. She said that the government Agencies should promote natural products like ‘Dona and Pattal’ which are environment friendly.
In addition, women’s groups were also engaged in making “Pholbati” in Parasharamaur village of Mangraura block of the same district and more rural women are getting attracted towards this venture of manufacturing “Pholbati”.
UPSRLM officials claimed that women in rural areas are being trained in making “Dona and Pattal”, murtis and “Pholbati” with the aim of making women self-employed as well as empowering them.
