The name has changed, this Nandigram is now ‘Mamatamayi Nagar’.

There was a place called ‘Nandigram’. Now, it is ‘Mamatmayi Nagar’. But this is not Nandigram in East Midnapore. This Nandigram is in Alipurduar district of West Bengal.

The place was a part of the Patotala area of Shamuktala that was settled two decades ago. Land grabbing was a major problem there from the very beginning. And the residents of the area were deprived of water and electricity for a long time. But when the land movement took place in Nandigram, the residents started calling their area as Nandigram after seeing the encouragement on the original name. That name also found a place in the registry.

After so many years of effort, electricity reached the area on Saturday 9 October.

The residents of Nandigram named their place ‘Mamatamayi Nagar’ as a gesture of gratitude. Local gram panchayat member Shibani Debnath said, “After a long wait, electricity reached the village for the first time on this day. After that the local people want to name the village Mamtamayi Nagar.

Trinamool district president Mridul Goswami has also said the same thing.

Bhola Biswas, vice-president of Shamuktala region, said, “Nandigram is actually associated with a person who betrayed the party. So the local people wanted to get rid of that name.”

But is the name Nandigram associated with only one person? The leader of this movement was Mamta Banerjee herself. Trinamool district president Prakashchik Barack said, “That’s why people want the village to be named after the chief minister.

After a long wait of 20 years, the village got electricity and this happened just before Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the state. Electricity connection in the village will give impetus to the economy of the area.
