Aditya Dhar’s much-awaited sci-fi film The Immortal Ashwatthama may never see the light of the day. The film which was announced in 2021 has been officially locked. Not only this, the buzz is that the film has incurred a loss of 30 crores in its pre-production stage due to its casting and other technical reasons. While Vicky Kaushal was dropped from the film, Ranveer Singh walked in but was confused between Shaktimaan and Ashwatthama. NTR Jr. and Yash were also not keen on doing a superhero film. Amidst all this, the production company also shifted from Ronnie Screwvala to Jio Studios.

A source close to Pinkvilla revealed that Jio was not keen on signing Vicky Kaushal for the project as the film needed a star and not an actor. “Jio felt that Vicky Kaushal could not afford an expensive film like The Immortal Ashwatthama as the film warranted the presence of a star and not an actor. Samantha on the other hand had to back out of the project leaving the subject of no cast. Once Jio came on board, Aditya Dhar decided to be ambitious with his casting.

Aditya Dhar then decided to approach NTR Jr, Yash and Ranveer Singh. Being a massive fan of pan-Indian films, Dhar approached NTR Jr. to play the lead in his film, who was not interested. The same idea then went to Yash, who was not keen on doing a superhero genre film again. When Ranveer finally went with Ruchi, he had to choose between The Immortal Ashwatthama and Shaktimaan. He reportedly chose to go with the latter.

The source revealed, “For Ranveer, it is all about the script. While he is excited to play the role of Shaktimaan, the team of the film is yet to get a script. He didn’t say no to the immortal Ashwatthama, but he didn’t say yes either. Eventually Jio decided to shelve the film thinking that the recovery of the budget was not possible.

Now, the pre-production stage of the film has come to a halt. It was running for three years and now there is a loss of Re 1. 30 crore loss “The pre-production work is going on since last 3 years. A lot of money has also been spent on Reiki, pre-visualization and story boards. But all this will be wiped out as the stakeholders feel that it is better to suffer a loss of Rs 30 crore than investing Rs 300 to 350 crore on the project in the long run.

Back in 2019, after the success of Uri, Aditya Dhar was working day and night on his ambitious superhero film. The film was initially announced to star Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan in lead roles. With the pandemic, the film got delayed and once things became normal, the makers decided to replace Sara Ali Khan with Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
