Idol premiered in India on Monday.

Idol premiered in India on Monday.

The Idol released in India on 5 June, with the first episode premiering on Jio Cinema. The series stars Lily Rose-Depp and The Weeknd.

Idol premiered its first episode on Sunday, June 4, (Monday, June 5 in India) and created quite a stir. As the trailer already revealed, The Idol was bound to be a scandalous show about a musical artist and the dark alleys he treads. The new series stars The Weeknd and Lily Rose-Depp in lead roles, while Blackpink member Jennie makes her acting debut. From the first episode itself, it was indicated that how bold the upcoming episodes are going to be.

WARNING: spoilers ahead The first episode begins with viewers following Jocelyn (Lily Rose-Depp), a singer struggling with mental health issues and making sure her public image is not affected. There is a lot of pressure on him to make an impressive comeback. While her team is busy maintaining her stardom, she bumps into a club owner named Tedros (The Weeknd) and sparks fly. Soon Jocelyn and Tedros are seen getting intimate with each other.

While the premiere of the episode had me believing that it might face censorship in India, it looks like the series is streaming any censored content as of now. The first episode was released on Jio Cinema in India. At the time of reporting, not only was the slang dialogue not beeped, but the steamy scenes featuring Lily and Lily and The Weeknd in semi-nude scenes have not (yet) been blurbed. The subtitles also include all the lines so far without any cuts and censoring.

Idol premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month. Although it received a five-minute standing ovation, it was reported that many attendees dubbed the series ‘the TV version of clickbait’. The opening of the series has also not been good among the audience. Idol is rated 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The series is created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson and also has shades of The Zendaya Show.
