Vadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has created panic due to the low water level in Ajwa reservoir. If it does not rain soon, the availability of water from the reservoir may drop to a level where its supply will be affected. Data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) shows that Vadodara is rain deficient by 47% this season.
The VMC heavily depends on the Ajwa reservoir which supplies about 27% of the city’s water requirement. A major part of the supply from the reservoir goes to the eastern and southern parts of the city.
In view of the concerned situation, VMC Mayor Keyur Rokadiya has written a letter to Minister of State for Narmada Yogesh Patel, who is also an MLA from Manjalpur constituency of the city. Rokadia has requested Patel to ensure water supply to Ajwa from the Narmada Project canal near the reservoir. “At present, there is enough water in the reservoir. But there will be no rain in the coming days, we may need Narmada water. It is requested in the letter that water should be made available without any charges.
Amrit Makwana, VMC’s executive engineer for water supply, said the water pressure from the reservoir gradually goes down as its level decreases as the water is pulled in with gravity.
“In the past, it used to supply water up to a level of 203 feet, but the low pressure reduces the supply,” he said.
