‘That’s something I’ve actually worked for’: Venkatesh Iyer Flexible to bat wherever team wants

Youth India All-rounder Venkatesh Iyer feels that he will continue to be flexible in the batting order just like his batting line-up. The southpaw, who batted at the top of the order IPL For Kolkata Knight Riders, India played a different role in their first series. The team management used him in the middle order to create some balance in the team, scoring 20 runs at No.6 in the third T20I at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

This was the second time in the series when the lucky all-rounder was asked to bat at No. 6 as before in the first T20I, with the team management entrusting him with the role of elimination, where he did not perform well. While in the Ranchi T20I, he was promoted to bat at No. 3 and remained unbeaten on 12 in India’s victory.

Iyer said that he is working on bringing flexibility in the batting order and his team is ready to bat wherever they want.

“I have always said that as a professional cricketer, you have to be really flexible about where you want to bat. There may be times when you are going to play in the middle order, but in the powerplays, you may get a chance to bat. It’s something I’ve really worked on – I adapt to whatever situation I’m going to play in. I’m going to see better than this,” said Iyer after the third T20I.

The talented batsman got instant success in IPL 2021 as he played a big role in KKR’s rejuvenation in the second half of the season. He scored 370 runs in 10 matches when KKR reached the finals after 2014.

Meanwhile, Iyer also got a chance to play his arms in the third T20I as he said it was good to bowl at the end. He was economical with bowling figures of 1/12 in his three-over spell.

He said, ‘That’s what I am in the team for – batting and bowling. It was nice to finally get a bowl. Everyone wants to play for the country. If the team wins and that too widely, it’s a special feeling. I hope this continues for a long time,” Iyer said.
