Thane: The Kharegaon Rail Over Bridge (ROB), which was stalled for over two decades, was finally inaugurated for the public, amid a high-profile political drama by the Shiv Sena-NCP over ‘credits’ for the construction of ROBs on Saturday.
The ROB is a boon to thousands of citizens after the fatal railway gate closure on the tracks in Kharegaon, where citizens had to cross to reach Kalwa railway station, leading to many accidents and even motorists waiting to cross the line. fell.
The total cost of the project is Rs 38.94 crore in which the railway bridge and TMC have spent Rs 27.34 crore.
Citizen sources said that due to this level crossing, there used to be delay in local trains on the Central line and earlier it used to affect the schedule to a great extent including express trains. Also, thousands of people lost their lives due to the crossing. But after a long delay, it was finally inaugurated by the Guardian Minister Eknathi. Shinde , Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad , MP Shrikant Shinde , Mayor Naresh Mhaske among others.
Heavy drama took place at the inauguration site where political workers of the NCP-Shiv Sena raised slogans when the ministers – Shinde and Awhad – reached the site.
It may be recalled that Thane, NCP and Shiv Sena fought among themselves to get the credit for this bridge. In his speech, the ministers as well as the MP tried to bridge the ‘rift’ between each other at the inauguration site and said that ‘all of them have done their job for the RoB’. Awhad pressed for an alliance with Shiv Sena, but Shiv Sena leaders are mulling over it as the housing minister voiced his voice for the upcoming civic polls.
Later in an urgent press conference, Awhad revealed that he had been invited the day before without his consent or the schedule. Mayor Naresh too Mhaske Called for an urgent press conference which claimed that Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde and MP Shrikant Shinde had been informed a day earlier. Mhaske claimed, “It was in the interest of the citizens to have the inauguration done as soon as possible.”
It was said that a proposal to name the ROB after late Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe would be moved in the next general body meeting.
The civic officials informed that the ROB has been constructed by Central Railway as well as TMC at Level Cross No. 28/c.
The total length of the bridge is 641 meters and the width is 11.30 meters. Out of this, the railways did the work of 63 meters long bridge on the railway line. The work of elevated link road on the east and west side of the railway boundary outside the railway jurisdiction has been done by TMC.
The works done by TMC include the east side of the flyover which is 308.00 meters, the length of the bridge on the west side which is 270.00 meters and the width of the bridge (for vehicles) which is 7.50 meters. TMC officials said stairs have been made available for pedestrians on the eastern and western sides to cross the railway line.
