‘Tendulkar’s record very achievable’: Australia legend thinks Joe Root can break Sachin’s record for most runs in Tests

Former Australia captain Mark Taylor believes that Joe Root has a real chance of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in the history of Test cricket. On Sunday, Root hit his 26th century of Test career and in the process became only the second batsman for his country to reach the 10,000-run milestone in the format.

Overall, the 31-year-old is the 14th batsman in Test history to score 10,00 runs in Test cricket and his current tally now stands at 10,015 runs in 118 matches.

Taylor feels that Root has at least five years of cricket left and the pace at which he is scoring runs in the longest format, the Englishman could very well surpass Tendulkar’s tally of 15921 runs in Tests.

“There is at least five years left at Root, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable,” Taylor said. sky game, “Root is batting as well as I have seen him bat for the last 18 months to two years. He is at the top of his career, so he has 15,000 run-plus for him if he stays healthy.”

Tendulkar retired in 2013 as the highest run-scorer of international cricket, with a record 100 centuries across all formats. Root is the latest contender for his record for most Test runs after another Englishman Alastair Cook, who retired in 2018 with 12,472 runs.

Incidentally, both Root and Cook were 31 years and 157 days old when they touched the 10,000th Test run milestone and are thus now the joint-youngest players to reach the milestone.

Meanwhile, Root revealed how the captaincy was affecting his health.

“To be honest, it had become a very unhealthy relationship between the captaincy and me,” the player-of-the-match told reporters after the end of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s.

“It really started taking a toll on my own personal health. I couldn’t leave it on the field now, it was coming home,” he said.
