Telangana: Forest officer trying to save plantation killed by encroachers | Hyderabad News – Times of India

HYDERABAD: A forest officer, Chalmala Srinivasa Rao of Chandragonda range of Kothagudem division of Telangana, who was attacked with a knife and an axe in the forest area of Errbodu of Bendalapadu beat area, died on Tuesday.
Chalmala Srinivasa Rao, 42, is survived by wife, a son and a daughter. He is a Native of Erlapudi village of Raghunadhapalam mandal, khammam district.
Foresters said that Rao is a real hero who was killed while trying to save the forest. Srinivas Rao was attacked with sharp weapons by Guttikoya tribals while he was trying to save the Plantation done by the forest department during Haritaharam. Guttikoyas are trying to chop forest plantations in order to encroach and do podu cultivation.
The government is currently doing a massive exercise to grant forest rights to the encroachers, which resulted in a spurt of fresh encroachments. Officials Last minute efforts to save FRO Srinivas failed.
Srinivasa Rao was earlier presented Late KvsBabu Gold medal and cash prize for 2020-21.
Rao recently produced an Audio song in Telugu highlighting the need for protection of forests and to create awareness, he was urging people not to encroach forests. Telangana forest minister Indrakaran Reddy condoled the death of Forest Range Officer.
Forest and environment minister Indrakaran Reddy has expressed deep shock over the death of the forest officer. He conveyed his deepest sympathy to the family members.
He said: “While the government is working sincerely to solve the problem of podu lands it is illegal and unjust to attack the officials who are performing their duties. He made it clear that forest encroachment will not be tolerated and legal action will be taken against encroachers.”
The minister asked the forest officials not to lose courage. He said that legal action would be taken against the attackers so that such incidents will not take place in the future.
State forest officers Association president M Raja Raman Reddy said: “It’s very sad and unfortunate incident, I strongly condemn the assault on Srinivas Rao FRO , Chandrugonda, who’s very hardworking and sincere forest officer, recently Srinivas Rao have got KVS Babu gold medal for rendering meritorious services in controlling encroachment of pristine reserve forest lands”.
